LEBDV Helps Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia Recycle Eyeglasses

CHOP

"It was serendipitous," says Ivy Fenton Kuhn, Nurse Practitioner at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Pediatric Ophthalmology Department.

Ivy was describing her good fortune in placing a call to the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley. She wanted to hold a collection drive for discarded eyeglasses after reading a magazine article about the vision needs of children around the globe. Her colleague, Amanda Fonash, an Ambulatory Social Worker, recalls how she and Ivy discovered long ago that they had a shared interest in the same project.  After recently finding an old pair of eyeglasses at home, Amanda decided, "Now is a good time to implement our idea."

Ivy thought she was calling a Lions Club to get information on how to obtain collection boxes. Instead, she dialed LEBDV where a number of staffers are members of Lions Clubs. They thought it would be a great idea to donate collection boxes to the CHOP initiative.  Jim Quirk, President and Chief Operating Officer of LEBDV, knows the importance of eyeglass recycling.  A Lion for over a decade, Jim's Club regularly donates glasses. "After learning about their passion for the project and how it aligned with our relationship with Lionism - we were founded by Lions -- we wanted to help CHOP raise awareness as well as increase eyeglass donation."

Ivy thoughtfully says, "Just knowing that someone will be able to see because of this project is a good feeling and an extension of what we do here at CHOP."

The CHOP eyeglass recycling initiative is in high gear and will end December 1st.
